RECOLIGHT GOES ON TOUR WITH SIX REGIONAL WEEE WORKSHOPS

Recolight, now approved as a producer compliance scheme for gas discharge lamps and related equipment, is hosting six workshop events this spring to update and explore the impact of the WEEE Regulations with all stakeholders involved in the lamps market. The WEEE Regulations come into full force on 1st July 2007 so it is hoped that the timing of these workshops will prove very helpful to all those involved in dealing with lamps e.g. electrical distributors, contractors, and local authorities.

Set up by UK lamp industry, Recolight will seek to establish an efficient and cost effective process for recycling end-of-life lamps and related equipment, which is fully compliant with the Regulations. This will involve supporting and facilitating the development of a national network of collection points for end-of-life products and arranging contracts for the collection and recycling of such products.

The workshops will explain the implications of the new Regulations for the lamps industry, describe Recolight's proposed process/system for meeting the regulatory requirements and then explore the business implications and opportunities/threats for the industry.

The half day events from 10.00am to 12.30pm are being held in the following locations:

LEEDS, Weetwood Hall, Leeds Ring Road North - Tuesday 17th April
GLASGOW, Scottish Exhibition Conference Centre, City Centre - Friday 27th April
MANCHESTER, Manchester United FC, Old Trafford - Wednesday 9th May
BELFAST, Dunadry Hotel - Country Club, Antrim - Wednesday 16th May
CARDIFF, Vale Hotel & Golf Resort (M4) - Thursday 24th May
LONDON, Emirates Stadium, Arsenal FC, Islington - Thursday 7th June

Recolight Chief Executive Eddie Taylor commented; "If your business distributes or installs gas discharge lamps or if you're a significant user, then it is likely the WEEE Regulations from July will affect you to some degree. These workshops are designed to provide information and encourage discussion about the WEEE Regulations and the Recolight process/systems to those involved in the lamps industry such as distributors, installers and local authorities. Our aim will be to make them interesting, informative and interactive.

"The WEEE Regulations represent a significant change for the industry and we aim through events such as these workshops, as well as establishing practical processes for meeting the legal requirements imposed by the Regulations, to help the industry to handle that change as effectively and efficiently as possible."

Set up by the UK lamp industry, Recolight is a compliance scheme created to meet the obligations of its members under the WEEE Regulations (SI 2006 No. 3289 The Waste Electrical and Equipment Regulations 2006),which is due to come fully in to force on 1st July 2007. The WEEE Directive aims to ensure the environmentally sound treatment of Gas Discharge Lamps (GDLs) and related equipment when they come to the end of their useful life. Producers and their Schemes will therefore become responsible for organizing and financing the collection, treatment, recycling and recovering of end-of-life GDLs.
