CORRIDORFUNCTION
The corridorFunction is an innovative feature of the PCA Excel one4all and PCA Eco lp digital dimmable ballasts from TridonicAtco GmbH & Co. KG, Dornbirn/Austria. It offers considerable potential for energy savings. This applies above all for lighting solutions where safety standards dictate that the lights have to be on round the clock at different brightness levels depending on the time of day. Examples of places where constant lighting is needed include corridors in hotels that have to have an illuminance of 100 lx by day according to European standard DIN EN 12464-1 and a lower level by night. Similarly, corridors in health facilities such as hospitals have to have an illuminance of 200 lx by day and 50 lx by night.
Luminaires equipped with dimmable PCA ballasts offer added value here. By simply adding conventional motion sensors Ð without any additional controller Ð the corridorFunction meets all these lighting requirements, provides a high level of safety and security round the clock, saves a considerable amount of energy and offers added convenience. As soon as a person is present the lighting is switched to high illuminance, and then is slowly faded to the energy-saving level when there is no one in the vicinity.
The corridorFunction is an intelligent way of combining energy efficiency and economy on the one hand with safety on the other. This is illustrated most impressively in underground car parks for example where DIN EN 12464-1 calls for artificial light with different brightness levels at all times of day and night. Nowadays most underground car parks are equipped with non-dimmable luminaires which are operated 24 hours a day at an illuminance that is above the minimum level to provide a feeling of safety. The corridorFunction also provides a feeling of safety and well-being but with much greater energy efficiency and convenience.
Because any number of motion sensors and luminaires with dimmable PCA EXCEL one4all or PCA T5 ECO lp can be connected in parallel it is possible to provide total cover for long corridors or large areas such as underground car parks. The corridorFunction enables the luminaires to be controlled via motion sensors in an entire underground car park, in expansive areas or just in individual zones. This is the basis for various scenarios that combine safety with energy efficiency.
For example, the route users take in the car park can be brightly lit and the rest of the car park can be left at minimum illuminance, and all the luminaires can be dimmed to the Òenergy-saving levelÓ after a defined period of time.
Because there is no need for any controllers, just motion sensors and luminaires with dimmable PCA EXCEL one4all or PCA T5 ECO lp ballasts, the additional cost of investing in presence-controlled lighting with the corridorFunction is minimal. Thanks to energy savings compared with a non-dimmable lighting system that operates at 100% luminous flux, the additional costs are offset in the extremely short time of less than two years. The corridorFunction therefore offers not just energy efficiency, convenience and safety but also impressive economy.
