Neueslicht installs decorative light sculpture at Europe’s newest museum

NeuesLicht has installed a massive Crystal Shower chandelier at the European Museum of Modern Glass in Bavaria, which is due to open to the public in October.

Designed in collaboration between NeuesLicht’s Simon Bruenner and Japanese artist Masayo Oda, the chandelier is based on Bruenner’s original Scintilla light first launched two years ago. Measuring 2.5 meters in diameter, Crystal Shower consists of 8,000 meters of fibre optic cable and is made up of 500 Swarovski crystals illuminated by five 150W metal halide projectors. The light is fed through the fibres directly into the crystals for maximum refraction, creating the impression of a shower of sparkling rain.

Set to be a permanent feature of the museum’s reception hall, this is German-based NeuesLicht’s first installation in a public space. The concept of the chandelier took 18 months to perfect, but the piece was actually made in two weeks and assembled on site. As with all NeuesLicht’s creations, the chandelier is not for providing general light, rather they are sculptural designs that make an extraordinary impact by their innovation and use of fibre optics and LEDs. For maintenance, Crystal Shower’s light sources are easily accessible and the sculpture itself does not need to be touched other than for cleaning.

Having worked extensively on commissions for private clients across Europe and the Middle East, NeuesLicht are now working on further public space projects including a piece for the Air Rail Hilton hotel in Frankfurt which is made up of 18 illuminated pieces arranged like a cloud.

NeuesLight’s chandeliers, including Ufo and Citrullus, are available in the UK from Cameron Peters.
